For generations, families throughout Southeast Michigan have welcomed spring, planted gardens and created outdoor spaces with Bordine’s. What began as a small roadside stand has grown into four garden centers—all while remaining family-owned and rooted in the same passion for exceptional plants.
Where It All Began
In 1939, Franklin D. Roosevelt was president, the American flag had only 48 stars, and Darrell and Marian Bordine sold their first flowering plants from a small stand along Rochester Road.
Much has changed since then, but the seeds they planted continue to thrive. Their commitment to growing high-quality plants and helping customers succeed in their gardens remains at the heart of Bordine’s today.
Our Story
1939 – The First Plants
Darrell and Marian Bordine begin selling flowering plants from a small roadside stand in Rochester.
Growing in Rochester Hills
The original Rochester Hills location grows into one of the area’s leading garden centers, offering an ever-expanding selection of Bordine-grown plants, gardening supplies and outdoor-living products.
1977 – Bordine’s Comes to Clarkston
A second location opens along Dixie Highway in Clarkston. With retail space in front and growing space behind it, the new location allows Bordine’s to expand its production of trees, shrubs and perennials.
1999 – The Bordine’s Farm
Bordine’s purchases a 100-acre property along US-23 in Grand Blanc. Known as the Bordine’s Farm, it becomes the center of the company’s plant-growing operation, where millions of seedlings and cuttings begin their journey.
2001 – Grand Blanc and Brighton
A retail garden center opens at the Grand Blanc farm, and Bordine’s adds its Brighton location—bringing the Bordine’s tradition to even more Michigan gardeners.
Bordine’s Today
Today, Bordine’s remains family-owned and operated, with garden centers in Rochester Hills, Clarkston, Grand Blanc and Brighton.
Behind every Bordine-grown plant is a team of dedicated Purple People who select, nurture and care for it from its earliest stages until it reaches your garden. While our garden centers and growing technology have changed through the years, our purpose remains the same: to help our customers create beautiful spaces and lasting family traditions.
